The Differing Features of Traditional And Modern Kitchens

Posted on October 11, 2019 in Uncategorized

Modern day interior designers tell us that he kitchen is the heart of the home. Many families spend most of their time in this room – gone are the days when kitchens were just used for preparing food and cooking! These days they are a social space used for entertaining guests, watching the TV, playing with the kids and so much more. As a consequence of this shift, the kitchen has become the room that people are most likely to upgrade and spend their money on. New kitchens, however, can be extremely expensive, so it is important that the customer takes into consideration a number of important factors.

It sounds obvious, but the first thing that should be considered is the style that the customer prefers. With so many different options out there, it is a good idea to visit a number of different showrooms in order to get an idea of what they think they might like. They should at this point take into account the style of the rest of the property. For example, a traditional country kitchen may not be the right look for an uber modern city flat. Conversely, an ultra modern kitchen may not work that well in a thatched cottage with beams and period features. That’s not to say that a mix of old and new cannot work. It just needs some careful thought in order to achieve a look that is in keeping with the rest of the house.

The Country Look in the Kitchen

This can be achieved by using natural materials – the doors and units in traditional, country kitchens are often wood (or sometimes wood effect). This produces an earthy and rustic feel. Shaker style doors are also popular in the country kitchen. The units are often white, cream or a pastel colour.

The choice of flooring is also important – stone flooring works particularly well in country style kitchens.

The use of vintage and retro accessories in a traditional kitchen is becoming increasingly commonplace. These can really complete the look. Pretty floral cushions and the use of pastel coloured gadgets (toasters and kettles etc) all add to the finshed effect. A dresser that displays crockery can also look great in the country kitchen.

The Contemporary Kitchen

The modern kitchen has sleek, clean lines. It is generally minimalist and surfaces are kept clutter free. There are many styles of cupboard doors to choose from, but flat panel, fuss free cabinets are a popular choice. When it comes to colour choice, it really is the preference of the customer. White can look striking. On the other hand dark tones such as berry and purple, or even black, can look great in the contemporary kitchen.

Stainless steel appliances are a common choice in the modern kitchen.

Contemporary kitchens may make use of ultra modern and innovative gadgets, but they generally don’t feature a large amount of accessories.
